Community sporting facility
This ‘state of the art’ multi-function sporting facility contains a purpose built basketball / netball court with meeting / spectator amenities and associated service areas, and is quickly becoming a landmark building in the local community.

  • Location: Jackson Avenue, Karrinyup
  • Contract source: Design and construct tender

Project Features

Prominent design feature:
A key design feature of the building is the curved facade to the front elevation, the bold use of colour, and the sculptured garden and entry statement to this prominent community amenity. The building is adjacent to a residential area, and whilst positioned in a prominent location, the facility is also required to integrate with its surrounding environment. The design takes advantage of the natural environment and contains a vast car park to ensure convenience of use for patrons. The facility also contains external facilities with basketball courts located at the rear.

Construction features: Innovation in the structural design was important to achieve a cost effective and time efficient solution. Portal steel framing allowed the early installation of the roof. This facilitated the erection of the double brick walls during winter months and allowed for other internal work to proceed during rain periods. Precast ‘delta-core’ panels were used for the bleachers area, eliminating the time consuming methodology of formwork construction.

Internal features: The building aesthetics were important for conveying the sporting nature of the facility. Bold vibrant primary colours were used both internally and externally to achieve this and also to accentuate the various building forms, materials and room functions. A local artist was commissioned to provide external artwork to further communicate the multi-sporting use of the building. Multi functionality of the building was essential. The building was required to house internal courts for basketball, badminton, netball and volleyball. External bitumen courts offered the same. Kitchen facilities and meeting rooms were also required. A crèche was provided to cater for mothers groups. Multiple storage rooms were provided for the storage of the various sporting equipment.
